Choicesby Caramel Candy Reviewed by: The Pathfinder Choices, by Caramel Candy, tell the story of Carmen Johnson, a “good girl” with a young baby who enters college on a scholarship. By chance she crossed path with several exotic dancers who were employed at the Gold Mine, and her life would forever change. Encourage by the women’s dress, and the amount of money they claim to make, Caramel decided this was something she wanted to do. A close-knit group, Caramel and her girl’s struggle with the daily nuances of being an exotic dancer in spite of the money they made. The lifestyle they chose had them constantly looking over their shoulders. Dishonesty and deception soon became a part of Caramel’s life has she kept her “exotic dancer’s life” hidden from her best friend and mother until it was revealed after one of her admirers followed her home. Caramel delved into her new life with a lot of fervor. She was living in the fast lane. She had new friends. She could have any man she wanted, and they showered her with affection. The need to be a part of something different took her on an adventure where robbery, deceit, lies, HIV, murder-suicide, and a number of secrets are revealed. Losing control and no longer able to deal with the many issues that confronted her. Caramel made a last ditch effort to straighten out her spiraling life by reuniting with her parents and the world she knew. With a heavy heart, and a new lease on life, Caramel enters the church where she found some peace. Unfortunately, for me I couldn’t understand why it took me several pages before I found out Caramel’s birth name. I found this advice by Caramel’s grandmother rather humorous. “My grandmother always told me; as long as I got the most valuable thing in the world between my legs I should never be broke.” What was that all about? What kind of advice is that? Yet knowing this Caramel was broke early on in her life, and said she gave it “up regularly”. What did you like best about this book?
